Wicked Ways

Proverbs 6:16-19

There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him:

We run toward those things that God loves, the qualities and attributes that He wants to see in His children. We strive to show love and kindness, to have respect and concern for one another, and to embrace all that is good in His eyes. Adversely, we should run from those things that God hates, which are:

  1. Haughty eyes – proud and arrogant, looking down on others with disdain.
  2. A lying tongue – bringing hurt and destruction; they can ruin someone’s life, even after the truth comes out, lies are hard (sometimes impossible) to recover from.
  3. Hands that shed innocent blood – taking the live of another human being who has done nothing wrong.
  4. A heart that devises wicked plans – a perverted heart, conniving, scheming, plotting against others to bring pain or hurt.
  5. Feet that make haste to run to evil – ignoring the laws of God for the pleasure or satisfaction of fleshly desires.
  6. A false witness who breathes out lies – leading people astray through watered-down doctrine.
  7. One who sows discord among brothers – Christian against Christian, spreading rumours and gossip.

This is a vivid picture of the sinful nature of man, from head to toe… the eyes, the tongue, the hands, the feet, the heart, the soul. Verses 12 to 15 describe the ways of the wicked, the ways that the Lord hates, and concludes ‘calamity will come upon him suddenly; in a moment he will be broken beyond healing’. Healing and forgiveness come when we turn from our wicked ways and seek God’s face; His judgement is not something to be toyed with.
