Faith

Shield of Faith

Ephesians 6:16

In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.

Following on from yesterday and the trials we will face from time to time, we can be confident in the protection that God provides.

In all circumstances… Not some circumstances, not just difficult circumstances, but all circumstances. The Lord is with us all the time. He can’t not be because He lives within us. He doesn’t just want you to rely on Him when things are tough, he wants you to rely on Him for every single aspect of your day. We need to learn to carry the shield of faith at all times. Depending on your age, you may recall an advertising slogan that said ‘Don’t leave home without it’. The ad said ‘You will not feel safe and secure enough to enjoy a convenient and hassle-free day if you go out without your American Express card.’ I would like to replace those last three words with Shield of Faith.

All the flaming darts… What the devil throws at you is meant to cause damage and he will try to attack you every which way. A dart or arrow on its own is going to hurt but one that has been set on fire is going to inflict immense pain. That is why Paul encourages the Ephesians to “put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil”. God has provided us with the ultimate protection but it is absolutely useless if you leave it at home.

So let’s take up the shield of faith daily, always stay alert and with the Lord’s help, stand firm.
